Odessa (Odesa) 11 November 2001
Kiev (Kyiv)

Another photo of Panteleimonovskaya Orthodox Church from the hotel balcony.
Elena in the lobby of the Archaeology Museum.
sculpture of the Palais Royal
(???) Explanation forthcoming.
Painting uncovered during a restoration. The painting is alleged to be Catherine the Great, who was instumental in Odessa early development and changing the name to the modern name of Odessa, in the feminine form of the name. It is assumed that the painting was painted over during the communist period. As I believe a public exhibition of a Romanov might have been seen as 'inappropriate'. The style, pose and nature of the surrounding symbols, actually implies that this painting might actually be a painting of the Roman goddess Fortuna, or Catherine the Great as Fortuna. At leasat this is my recollection of the description of the painting. (History by Helena)
Monument to the Potyomkin sailors in Potyomkin Plaza.
View of the garden of the house built by Tostoy for his wife.
Views of the Tostoy house, now converted into a conference center used by the local schools and universites.
Plant known as the 'mother-in-law's tongue' ;-)
Flight back to Kyiv.
